To the camp site

The site of Camp Westerbork and the Westerbork National Monument are located 3 kilometres from the Memorial Centre. The museum and the camp site are linked by educational walking routes. The camp site can be reached by bicycle via the tarmac access road.

It is not permitted to drive your own car, bus or motorbike to the camp site. Near the camp site, Astron, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, operates the radio telescopes installed there. In addition to electronic devices, cars and buses in the vicinity also interfere with Astron’s observational work. If you break this rule, you risk a fine.

Shuttle bus
The shuttle bus runs between the campsite and the museum. If you have a museum ticket, you can also use it for the bus (return journey). Single bus tickets are available at the museum reception (debit card only). You can also walk or cycle to the campsite (2.7 km).

How to get here

There are several ways to reach the Memorial Centre:

  • The museum can be reached by car via the A28 motorway. Are you coming from the direction of Utrecht/Zwolle? Then take exit 31 at Beilen towards Westerbork. After leaving the motorway, follow the signs for Hooghalen. From the next junction, signs will point you towards the former Westerbork camp.

Are you coming from the direction of Groningen? Then take exit 31a Assen-Zuid at Assen. After leaving the motorway, follow the signs for Hooghalen; ‘Voormalig kamp Westerbork’ will soon be signposted.

  • If you are travelling part of the way to the Camp Westerbork Memorial Centre by train, you can get off at Assen or Beilen station. Beilen station is only accessible by local train. For travel planning, fares, and departure and arrival times, please visit the NS website

  • There is a bus service to Hooghalen. Please note that from Hooghalen bus station, you will need to walk approximately 2 km eastwards to reach the Remembrance Centre. Unfortunately, no transport service is available for this stretch. For up-to-date transport options and journey times, please visit the 9292 website

  • The Camp Westerbork Memorial Centre is one of the hub locations in the North-Central Drenthe region. This means that visitors to the Memorial Centre can use the hub taxi at the same fare as regional bus transport. The hub taxi allows journeys of up to twenty kilometres from a transport hub. This makes it possible to travel by hub taxi from Assen or Beilen station to the Memorial Centre.

Please ensure you book a hub taxi on time. You can do this by telephone on 0800 - 4020102. Further information about the hub taxi, transport options from other locations (such as a holiday park) and the fares can be found on the website of Publiek Vervoer Groningen-Drenthe
